The Washington Capitals have fired head coach Adam Oates and will not be renewing the contract of their GM George McPhee. Umm.

Sure you can easily blame these two guys for the Capitals not making the playoffs by three points.  But until Alex Ovechkin starts playing with more heart the Caps will never be a Stanley Cup contending team.  Lucky for owner Ted Leonsis he’s got Ovechkin locked up until eternity at 9.5 million/year.  Good luck moving that contract without heart.

Time and time again coaches are all too often blamed for their team’s performance.  I would agree that some coaches just don’t fit a particular team.  In Washington's case how many decent coaches will this team have until they realize they need a major overhaul in player personnel?

Some names floating around to replace Oates are ex Nashville Predators head coach Barry Trotz and ex Philadelphia Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette.  Although I’m sure these two coaches would plug a few holes in Washington, I would like to see this team think inside of the box and maybe promote from within.  The person to promote is Larry Courville.

As the head coach of the Capitals ECHL farm team the Reading Royals, former NHLer Courville has led his team to last year’s Kelly Cup championship and with a little luck from the hockey gods could repeat this year.  Aside from winning the championship, Courville has also found in few goalie diamonds the rough.  Goalies Ben Scrivens and Drew MacIntyre were Courville acquisitions from various leagues and unfortunately lost them to the NHL and AHL respectively.

Moving forward the Caps should rethink their future plans and not hire out of impatience.  Right now time is on their side.
